Bubble Tea: A Closer Look

With the inclusion of our new bubble tea bar at The Green Teahouse, we’ve been answering a lot of questions about this tasty summer indulgence. While trendy coastal cities are catching on to the drink the world over (you can now order bubble tea from McDonald’s in Germany!), most Americans are still in the dark.

Bubble tea (also known as boba or milk tea) is a snack/beverage consisting of iced tea and chewy pearls (“bubbles” that you suck through a wide straw while drinking your tea) made of tapioca, a starch derived from the cassava root of Central America.

Bubble tea was first introduced to the world in mid-1980’s Taiwan, and since then its popularity has grown exponentially. We at the Green Teahouse carry the traditional green tea-flavored pearls (cooked fresh every day in our kitchen!), as well as fruit-flavored bursting bubbles (fruit juice jellies in a flavorless seaweed wrap that ‘burst’ in your mouth when you bite them).

Tapioca pearls are rich in B vitamins, specifically folate (vitamine B9), which helps to ensure the creation and growth of healthy cells. Tapioca is also very mineral-rich; one cup contains 2.4 milligrams of iron (13% of your Daily Value) and 30.4 mg of calcium (3% of your Daily Value),  as well as potassium, zinc, selenium, manganese, magnesium, and even copper! In addition to this, the pearls contain trace amounts of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, and carbohydrates to help curb your appetite.

The Green Teahouse is now fully equipped with bubble tea-making supplies: a refrigerated bubble bar, three blenders (for crushing ice and making tea slushies), and toppings like fresh-cut fruit, mango & green apple jelly, Asian sweet beans, mochi rice, and gumdrops. Come get yours today!
